LEOLA RUTH CARTER BERGMANN (Age 97)
On November 8th, 2019, Leola Ruth Carter Bergmann passed peacefully at her home in Silver Spring, Maryland. She lived to be 97 years old. She was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, the eldest of Bonnie Glenn Carter and Virginia Theresa Peterson’s three children. Ruth was very studious from an early age and excelled in school. She earned a degree in English from the University of Texas in 1943. She moved to Washington, DC during WWII, and worked at National Airport in the air traffic control division. In DC, she met her husband, Robert Theodore Bergmann, at a boarding house run by the Walther League of the Lutheran Church. They married November 17, 1945 and raised three children.
Ruth and Robert attended Calvary Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Maryland where she was active in the Altar Guild. Ruth was a loyal Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She had a fantastic memory and was extremely literate, completing daily crossword puzzles and winning avidly at Scrabble games into her nineties. She had an Oxford Unabridged English Dictionary on a pedestal in her kitchen which she regularly used. Her nature was steadfast, simple, and caring. She was sharp, meticulous, organized and intelligent. She had a passion for ancestry and history. She was extremely dutiful to her family and will be greatly missed.
Ruth was preceded in death by husband Robert (1921-1996). She is survived by children Paul (Carole), Martha and Ted, as well as her much loved grandchildren Luke (Bonan) and Rita. Ruth will be buried in Concordia, Missouri, alongside husband Robert and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in the spring.
